Karnataka to Re-Verify Gruha Jyothi Beneficiaries, Fresh Applications to Be Issued Across State: CM D.K. Shivakumar
Bengaluru, June 29: The Karnataka government has announced a major review of beneficiaries under its flagship Gruha Jyothi free electricity scheme. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said the government will issue fresh application forms to all beneficiaries as part of a statewide verification drive aimed at preventing misuse and ensuring that only eligible households continue to receive free electricity benefits.
The announcement was made during a felicitation programme organised by the Karnataka Electricity Transmission Corporation (KPTCL) Employees’ Union and affiliated associations at Palace Grounds in Bengaluru.
Fresh Applications for All Beneficiaries
According to the Chief Minister, nearly 1.64 crore households are currently benefiting from the Gruha Jyothi Scheme. However, reports of irregularities and misuse have prompted the government to introduce stricter verification measures.
As part of the new process:
- Fresh application forms will be distributed to beneficiaries.
- Officials will conduct door-to-door verification.
- Photographs and supporting documents will be verified.
- Applications will be approved only after proper scrutiny.
The government believes the re-verification exercise will improve transparency and ensure that subsidies reach deserving families.
Only Eligible Karnataka Residents Will Receive Benefits
CM D.K. Shivakumar clarified that the scheme is intended exclusively for eligible residents of Karnataka.
He stated that individuals who have migrated from other states for employment and are not registered voters in Karnataka will no longer be eligible to receive benefits under the Gruha Jyothi Scheme.
The government plans to strengthen its eligibility checks to prevent unauthorized beneficiaries from claiming free electricity.
Multiple Electricity Connections Under Scanner
The Chief Minister also warned against misuse through multiple electricity connections.
If a person is found claiming Gruha Jyothi benefits for more than one electricity connection registered in the same name, authorities will identify such cases and disconnect the ineligible connections without delay.
The move is expected to reduce fraudulent claims and improve the efficiency of the scheme.
Door-to-Door Verification Process
To make the verification process transparent and accurate, officials from the Energy Department will visit households personally.
The verification process will include:
- Collection of fresh application forms.
- Verification of applicant photographs.
- Checking identity and address details.
- Validation of eligibility documents.
- Final approval by concerned authorities.
Officials have been instructed to ensure that genuine beneficiaries do not face unnecessary inconvenience during the exercise.
Genuine Beneficiaries Will Continue to Receive Free Electricity
While announcing stricter checks, the Chief Minister assured citizens that the government’s objective is not to remove deserving beneficiaries.
He emphasized that every genuine household eligible under the Gruha Jyothi Scheme will continue receiving free electricity without interruption.
The verification drive is primarily intended to eliminate misuse while protecting the interests of honest beneficiaries.
